Toshiyuki Fujiwara was ambassador to Azerbaijan and Georgia. Fluent in Turkish, he is Japan's leading expert on the Turkic region, including the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union. He has worked on conflict resolution in the Caucasus. He holds a degree in law from Keio University.

Katsunari Suzuki was Japan's representative for the normalization talks with North Korea and representative to the executive board of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) until 2005. He was ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Viet Nam and Brazil, and executive director of the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Office.

Mr. Tonny Dian Effendi (Indonesia) is Lecturer, Department of International Relations, University of Muhammadiyah Malang.
His research topic is "Japan's Public Diplomacy Process."

Mr. Konstantine Tsereteli is Lecturer, Institute of Asia and Africa, Tbilis Free Univeristy / Senior Specialist, Ministry of Defence of Georgia.
His research topic is "East Asian Community and the role of Japan in it."

Dr. Ni Feng (China) was Professor/Assistant Director-General of the Institute of American Studies (IAS) at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and Chief of the IAS' Division of American Foreign Policy.
His research topic was "Trilateral Dialogue among China, Japan and America --- from the Second Track to the First Track?"
His research at JIIA was funded by a fellowship from the Japan Foundation.

Mr. Andrin Raj (MALAYSIA) was Director, Stratad Asia Pacific Strategic Centre.
His research topic was "Japan's Initiatives in Security Cooperation in the Straits of Malacca on Maritime Security in Southeast Asia: Terrorism and Maritime Security."

Dr. Valijon Khoshimov (UZBEKISTAN) was Head, International Legal Expertise Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
His research topic was "Foreign Policy of Japan and Central Asia."

Dr. Paul Midford (U.S.A.) was Director, Japan Program, Department of Political Science and Sociology, Norwegian University of Sxience and Technology.
His research topic was "Overcoming the Reactive State: Japan's Leadership in Promoting East Asian Security Multilateralism."

2007

Prof. Sylvano Dong-E Mahiwo (PHILIPPINES) was Professor, International Relations, Asian Studies Program (Japan Studies), Asian Center, University of the Philippines Dilman."
His research topic was "ASEAN-JAPAN Contemporary Relations --- from Selective Engagement to Comprehensive Japanese Involvement --- with Focus on the Dynamics and Prospective Interface."

Mr. Marat Yerkatovich Nurgaliyev (KAZAKHSTAN) was Research Fellow, Foreign Policy Studies Department, Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
His research topic was "Development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Japanese Diplomacy towards Central Asia.

Dr. Sheila Smith (U.S.A.) was with the Council on Foreign Relations.
Her research topic was "Japanese Foreign Policy toward China and East Asia"
