研究センター

Since its establishment in June 1984, the Center for Russian Studies has been concentrating on comprehensive research regarding the former Soviet Union, CIS countries and Eastern Europe by organizing research projects with the participation of researchers and scholars from universities and other research institutions both in Japan and overseas.

Historic changes such as the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the reunification of East and West Germany, the establishment of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the disintegration of Yugoslavia, and the turmoil under the Yeltsin government in Russia have underlined the importance of the research activities carried out by the Center.

Beginning in 1992, the Center has been inviting a small number of scholars and researchers each year from the former Soviet Union and countries in Central and Eastern Europe in order to enhance intellectual exchange with these countries.

For 2000, the Center conducted research mainly in the following areas:

  1. Legislative trends in Russia - the present state of economic law;
  2. Domestic political trends in Russia;
  3. Russia's Asia-Pacific foreign policy under the Putin Administration;
  4. Areas of conflict and structural changes within the former Soviet Union;
  5. Research meeting on the Russian Far East; and
  6. Research on key political and economic leaders in Russia and the former Soviet Union.

Furthermore, the Center has been continuing to update the former USSR area's "Who's Who" database.
