JIIA has three regional study centers (Russian Studies, Asia-Pacific Studies and American Studies) and one global issues section.
These regional study centers are responsible for research activities carried out by the institute in the form of study groups that are formed with the participation of experts and scholars from outside Japanese universities and research institutions.
These study groups meet regularly and the research projects' duration varies from a year to sometimes three years.
Each year, JIIA runs about 20-30 study groups divided among the regional study centers.
Some of the projects evolve into international conferences with the participation of overseas experts and scholars.
